Workload for kids at school

Hi Ladies,
Do any parents think the workload for our children at school is totally ridiculous my daughter is in grade 1 and besides being totally exhausted from school is expected to read, sight words, spelling plus Set maths and English activities daily, add her dancing and swimming lessons on top 2 afternoons a week she ends up in tears with frustration, she goes to a high achieving private school and isn't academically high herself more at a sound level and am worried the school is pushing these kids too much she has started crying in the mornings not wanting to go because its too hard : / So I guess I'm just seeing if other mums are in a similar predicament and would you consider changing schools to public or is it normal to be shovelling that much information into these poor kids, when are our kids just allowed to be kids if we don't do homework on the weekend to catch up she falls behind it just ridiculous!!

We had our children in a 'high achieving private school' and they were being inundated with homework, yet not actually learning as well as I would have expected. Don't get me wrong, they did the homework, they applied themselves, but there was just not as much that was being retained, and now I firmly believe that it was because of information overload. They had too much being thrown at them. We made the decision to take them out of the private school and put them in a public school and they are thriving. They are keeping on top of homework without stress, they are loving school again and they are learning a lot more which is actually being learned and retained. Best thing we ever did! My oldest has gone from average in academics to excellence in academics.

Is your daughter one of the young ones at school? Perhaps she needs another year of prep?
Or maybe as stated above the school is just inappropriate for your daughters needs...
Maybe speak with her teacher and see what they say and recommend?

I think you need to make a choice to what's important. Do you cut back swimming and dance or change schools / work with the teachers? My kids are in private with high expectations on study. There is a large workload & they are excelling. 2 are the youngest in their class so age isn't a factor. Try to work out the balance that works for your family. Good luck.
