Work options for teacher returning to work

I'm needing to return to work next year after having time off with my 8 month old son.

I'm a high school teacher and to return to work part time is difficult as it has to work with timetabled classes which could mean 4 days of varying hours just to teach one subject. If I was to take this option I'm worried about what would be the worth of this in regards to daycare for my son and the costs.

What have other teacher mums done with a young child and part time work?

How did casual teaching go for you or did you pick up another job till you could return full time?

Thanks

Could you relief teaching at primary school instead? That way you could have a full days work...

I did 2 days a week as a casual teacher. The first term I didn't always get days but by the second term I was booked up well in advance. Depending where you live there might be a real need for casual teachers which would work in your favour.
Alternatively from what I understand, family day care can offer more flexible childcare arrangements. Possibly a morning there and an afternoon there. Could be worth a look in?

I'm not sure which state you are in, but in qld you have the choice of how many days you work for 2 years after returning from maternity leave. I did .6 of a timetable this year, 3 full days, going up to .8 next year, 4 full days. You should be able to choose to do this. It is other regular part time staff that of have to work half days some of the time. Centre link have helped with child care, I end up paying a bit over 20$ a day. It has been excellent.

Have you looked at Council ran family day care? Quite often there will be kids in family day care that are at school or kinder during the day & the carer can have those hours free to take on another child. I have my daughter in FDC & I only need 4 hours for my shift, which slots in while another child is at kinder. Cheaper than paying a full day at day care too.
