Always have a menu plan and shopping list, and only buy what's on the list.
Buy no name foods where you can (some products are excellent quality, others are crap).

Don't buy brand names as you're only paying for the label. Generic brands are just as good. Only but what's on your list. Buy long life milk so it doesn't go off. Shop at Aldi. But specials when you see them (like a two for one deal or two items cheaper if bought together than they would be on their own at non special prices).

Buy hair care, toilet paper, deodorant, dish washing liquid, laundry powder ect.. From places like the reject shop and such! Majority of the time it is allot cheaper then the supermarkets! If you live near a market you could try going just on closing for the week. Like a Sunday afternoon, meat and fruit are super cheap because they need to get rid of there food! We do that allot at the Vic market. Saves SO much money!

Spend extra time going to the market and the butcher for veggies and meat. The price difference is ridiculous. Either make home made bread or buy cheap bread from Coles for like 2 bucks and freeze it, never let bread of mouldy such a waste of money. I'm also a young single mum and I try and keep 2 meals a day very basic, so we will have oats and fruit for breaky and a sandwich for lunch, both are very cheap! If I want anything extra like chocolate I always buy what's on special and stock up on things when they are on sale. Try and never buy things when they aren't on special and focus on your meal plans and snacks been what's on special. Like you said make a lot of home made foods and freeze, sometimes if I'm busy working I'll buy takeaway like Chinese and divide it into 4 containers that way I have 4 prepared meals.

meal plan! at the end of my 1 and a half/two week shop (with a mid week fruit and veg top) i have NOTHING in my fridge except vegemite and butter. i use EVERYTHING> i cook the meal that need freshness to start with, i make and freeze two eggplant lasagnes.... (packed with veggies)... I have one take out night (sat night which double as date night with hubby we go to the beach with bubs he sleeps in pram and we fish and and get takeaway)
everything i buy gets used according to when it will go off! veggies that last longer i buy in bulk... capsicum i buy a lot of! tomato goes in everything. i buy fresh fruit every monday as it is ALL gone by saturday
try to think about meal that have multi use weigh ingredients. (ig i use capsicum onion and zucchini in most everything. also if you want to say try and make a veggie lasagne... i get two HUGE lasagnes for about 15 bucks all up and everyone raves about them. (eggplant, veggies, cream cheese and spices )
i do not buy snacks. we eat fresh food and thats it. no packaging.
thats what we do and we spend about 200 a fortnight... 250 sometimes for 2 and a toddler. xx
