Telling work I'm pregnant

This is a big strange but please bear with me. I was on maternity leave with my second child last year. Before I started my leave I knew they were wanting my existing position to go full time. Having known this and knowing it was not something I was able or wanting to I quit from my position with five months left to go as I did not think it was fair of me to expect them to hold my position open when I knew what they were wanting so I wanted them to be able to fill it in the way they wanted.

I kept in contact with my boss and said if they ever needed someone to fill in on an emergency basis I was more than willing to help them out. This resulted in me going back into my old position on a casual part time basis. Since I have gone back I have been working the same days and hours as before. They put me back on permanent part time in jan of this year. My husband and I have found out we are expecting our third child, while it was unplanned, we are over the moon.

My question is, how do I tell my work? I love my job and the people I work for and with. It is perfect hours as if works around my kids and great money. I know they don't have to hold my position open (trust me I work in hr and payroll so I know that law). I want them to know it was not something we planned and that I would only like 6 months off but I'm not sure how to bring all this up with them.

Please only give advice, not criticism, as my husband and I are very aware of how lucky we are and my question is very simple but I had to give the back ground so my dilemma is understood. Thanks in advance xo

I would just tell them. It sounds like they respect you and like your work. Sit down with them be honest that it was a surprise to you. I think they would respect you for it rather than trying to put a spin on it.

Just tell them your wishes like you wrote here, it sounded fine & sincere. You sound like a great employee so I hope it all works in your favour. Good luck & congratulations on bubs #3

As an employer, if I had someone that did their job really well and fell pregnant and wanted to come back I would try an accommodate them providing they where up front and honest side down explain to them it was unplanned and that u would like to come back and see what they say,
