Starting solids

Starting solids

Hello hoping you mums can help me as I'm very new to this!

I'm 23, have a 4 month old bub who is very switched on and strong, miles ahead of all of her 4 month milestones! After reading all the symptoms of babies ready to start solids, I think she defiantly is. Stares at us eating dinner and opens her mouth, can sit up with very little support etc. I'm just struggling to know how/when/what to do to start? My usual MCHN is away on holiday and the replacement I had for 4month visit was shocking. Any question I asked about solids she just said "oh it's your baby you'll know what to do" and well, I have no idea. I'm the first of my friends to have a baby and my whole family lives in Europe. I feel quite disconnected from my mothers group as they are all aged 28-35 and there's such an age gap I just don't know who to talk to. Everything advised on the internet contradicts itself and I'm just feeling very lost. Please help me!

It can be a case of trying a few things to see. A simple thing to start with is a tiny but of puréed banana or puréed apple. Just mash the banana until a really smooth texture. You can put a tiny amount on the spoon and build from there. At this age food is for fun so don't worry about quantity. If she likes to put things in her mouth you could try some rusks (like a thick strong biscuit) so she can hold and basically gum it. It's up to you to decide if you want to make your own foods or happy with store bought. You can use store bought foods as a guide for flavours to try etc. at this age they are all really bland!

I also started my son at 4 mths. If their ready then go for it. I found farex cereal best to start its plain and can build from there once stomach gets used to food.
Have fun this is an exciting time watching them learn

4 mths is a great age to start solids that's when all 3 of my kids started. Start with just stewed apples or pears something plain, cook them up and then use a blender to make them into purée if it turn chunky then just add alittle water to smooth it out. Use alittle at a time when their learning it's more about taste than how much. With savoury foods only give veggies once ur little one turns 6 mths then start on meat but for now stick to veggies my son love pumpkin, carrot and corn ATM, same thing again blend it up nice and smooth. Kids will always love sweet stuff better than savoury. So when making savoury food I add an apple to begin with to add alittle sweet. I make baby food once a month and freeze it. I make different ones up and then potion it out into snap lock bags with what's in it on the front and then freeze it.

Just don't start them on fared or cereal mix, give her real food, mash some banana up... Or avocado ... The stomach is still so very little so just make sure it's fresh raw produce xx
