safety??

My child's father and i split up a few years ago due to extreme violence. since our split he has become more unpredictable and unstable. We have had several avos in the past as well as countless from his female family and his ex girlfriend.
He has never been a good father although he wanted us to be a family?
Since moving to be safer he hasn't changed as i hear from people we have mutual friends with.
He has been in and out of mental facilities and jail the past year.
I'm worried he may one day want to be near his child.
because we moved he left us alone for a while but i hear he has episodes where he makes plans to "get her"
Police won't allow an avo as no incidents have happened and the threat wasnt direct or proven.
his family know and stand by him as family do.
i tried legal aid but have been refused as right now he is in jail but he could be released anyday.
i don't have thecash for lawyers.
seems to be i need to hide away cos the law says he is fine to see her take her ect..
