Returning to work eventually

Returning to work eventually

I know this has been asked before but I can't find the question/responses.

What do you do when you want to (eventually) return to working? I don't have a job to go back to as I quit before moving interstate at the time, which was 3 years ago now. We've moved back to the city and have 2 kids (2 years and 2 months) and I don't know when or how I'm going to go about looking for a job! It won't be for another year (I hope!)
I didn't ask for a written reference when I left my job. I was with them for 5 years. I don't even know if my old boss is still working there and feel it would be awkward to ring and ask?
I was working in insurance and never EVER want to go back to that. I have my certificate 4 in financial services.
What would you suggest I do? Should I not worry about it until I'm actually looking to return to work? What do I do about references?

I feel like I can't function/engage in an adult conversation most days so returning to work, even if it is later in the future, scares me haha.

I think it's a good idea to do some 'work experience' or even some short courses. It's a great opportunity to try some new jobs, areas of interest. It also gives you a chance to find out what it would be like to work and have kids, and think about wether fulltime or part time is more appropriate. Work experience will give you a chance to find out what employers are really looking for so you can market yourself appropriately, or up skill if more study would be required.

Do you have your old boss's number or have them on Facebook? I wouldn't think it would be uncommon for someone to ring up after a few years wanting a reference. If you're still in touch with any of your old colleagues they could possibly be a character reference for you. Are you looking for a change of career too? The opportunities are endless really :)

My kids helped me stumble on my job.
I am a chef and owned a cafe. We live in a tourist area, hospitality isn't kid friendly at all where I am.
Doing swimming lessons with my 6 month old, did them for 18 months and decided I would like to do that.
In 4 years it's morphed into all kinds of avenues within the company I work for. I absolutely love it.
The only Thing is that I underestimated was the amount of training, courses, licences I needed.
But I chose to hold multiple licences.
