Recent ASD diagnosis

My 5 year old son has recently been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum (we've been told if they still diagnosed it, he would have Aspergers)

I am perfectly aware that it's not the end of the world, but am currently feeling slightly overwhelmed-we have spent the last couple of years in particular with his cousins and extended family making fun of his eccentricities, and to be honest, we thought he was acting out and have spent lots of time disciplining him, thinking he was just badly behaved.

He has been diagnosed as high functioning (some parts of his IQ testing were way above average) but it's the emotional and social side where he really struggles.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this, or some ideas of where we can turn (other than our child psychologist and paediatrician) to find help any information? I just have so much guilt about how he has gotten through the last few years while all this behaviour has been forming, and really want to give him all the tools we can for him to grow into the best person he can.

Do u have an early intervention program in ur area? My daughter has recently been diagnosed Aswel and she started early intervention and it has done her the world of good, she will start with speech and an OT Aswel to help with her behaviour and eating habits. Did ur paediatrician not give u any extra info? No names and numbers? Or groups? Mine referred me to a number of things including the early intervention. I know it all seems like a whole lot of information thrown at u all at once and is so so overwhelming but it will get better.
