Public vs Private Schools?

HI Mums .... bit of a long post but I am really hoping some of you can help me out with their amazing thoughts!
So I have three gorgeous kids, ranging from prep to year 4. They all go to the same public school which whilst is great I have begun to have reservations about just how much they are being taught, especially my year 4 son.
Our feeder high school doesn't have a very good reputation and my thoughts have always been I would send them there if the rep improves, if not I will look for other high schools. So it turns out that there are no other public high schools I can easily get my kids into and the local high school rep is going from bad to worse.
In having a look at the private schools in our area and in Hobart I have narrowed it down to two religious schools. We are not religious at all and not even sure if we could get in as I don't know the registration rules and regs. Now in checking out the fees for these schools they are really expensive (will be around $4-5k with perhaps reaching around $10k when all three are enrolled). My hubby is in two minds and thinks that with the extra $'s saved by keeping them in public we could put to our home loan and also enrol the kids into a heap of extra curricular activities (to broaden their circles of friends and knowledge base) like swimming, music and a few sporting activities.
I am really interested in hearing others thoughts about this. I know private schools are not the be all to end all but I just want to give my kids the very best opportunity I can. Thanks in advance ladies xx

Primary school will make no difference what so ever. So I'd at the very least save your pennies for high school. All schools have to hit national bench marks etc and follow the same curriculum guidelines.
My two sisters and I went to what was considered a Very rough school. We all got into our chosen uni courses, and have been successful in the careers we chose. We were exposed to a broad variety of people. If kids are academically minded and want to learn the school will make very little difference to there success.
My friend teaches in an exclusive private school and she said they still have difficult kids who are failing. The school is just better at advertising and PR than the public schools.

One of us is a doctor who works in cancer research. I have friends I went to HS with who are scientists, politicians, teachers, sports stars, psychologists.

If you can afford it do it!! If in your heart of hearts you think it's the right decision then go for it! It doesn't matter if you're not religious its good for kids to learn about all types of life. We are not religious and our son went to a catholic school in primary school, he wasn't a fan of mass but he learnt a lot and even taught me a few things. He still goes to a private school but it's not catholic and he loves his school. 10k for three kids is really good for private considering we pay close to 20k for one, mind you that's high school. Which is something to also think about, will you still want th to go private in high school? Because that is a lot more expensive! I will say that we did have him I'm public school first off until grade 4 so in my experience I will say that private is fantastic and to me worth every cent!
