IM Vent:
hi ladies, i need to vent/some opinions (yes the dreaded opinions!) my son started kindy this year. he has always been a boys, boy, he plays with sticks and he play fights and while i have always been very careful in not allowing him to bully other kids/ be bullied while play fighting for the most part i do let him be free and a typical boy. today he came home with a cut/ bruise across the bridge of his nose i asked what had happened he said the class naughty kid "lachlan" had kicked a ball into his face (possible accident) i asked if he cried or if he hit "lachlan" he said no i just got very angry and i told the teacher..... here is my vent/ question: this is the 4th injury to his face (a head bump from running into another kid while playing chasey, falling over doing the obstacle course exercise and bumping his head, same kid "lachlan hitting him with a stick and having a red mark across cheek) and the teachers have told me about none of them it is just when i am cuddling him that i notice the marks. in the first week of school he was playing with a girl he goes to playgroup with and they were sword fighting with sticks and the teacher told me he had been put in time out for playing with the sticks but even though 'lachlan' has been involved in 2 altercations with my son and at least 4 other with a couple of other kids the teacher has not told lachlans parents about his behaviour, or told us that our children have been hurt. my biggest concern though is that a blow to the head can result in concussion, shouldnt i be told ? he has scrapes and bruises on his arms and legs from play i am not worried about them, just the head injuries, am i being too much of a helicopter parent?

Not at all! Anytime he hits his head, you should be told! Concussion is real and very serious, especially in kids so you should be aware that you should be watching for.any symptoms... symptoms of.concussions can show any time within 48hrs of a head injury so it's important that you're made aware of.any such injuries so you can monitor and take appropriate action if needed.
I'd want to know about head injuries
How do u know Lachlans parents haven't been informed or he hasn't received time out? Kids make up stories all the time. As for the incidences you should have definitely have been told. Just expressed to his teachers you would liked to have been told abouts all incidents in future. Remember the ratio to teachers to children makes it impossible for the teachers to witness every single incident and your son might not even report it to the teacher. Just a bit of food for thought.
Yeah I agree
At the kindy my son went to if there was an incident resulting in a bruise or injury between children they filled out paperwork, informed both parents, and had the parents sign the paperwork. I don't know what (if any) procedures they have in place at yours but I would be questioning them about the steps they take when accidents/altercations happen.
May I ask what school this is at?
My son fell off the monkey bars in prep last year and hurt his arm, he didn't want to tell the teacher because he thought he would get in trouble. So when I went up to the school to pick him up at the end of the day he was holding his elbow, I asked him what happened and he said he fell off the monkey bars and the teachers aids were standing their watching and saw the whole lot happen and didn't say a single work about it. We went to the doctors 3 days later to find out that he had broken his elbow on the growth plate, I told the school and they did nothing. In the end it cost us nearlly 3000 to travel to get the surgeon to have a look at his arm to see if it needed to be realigned (but thank god it didnt) and to get a fibreglass cast on and fortnightly check ups. I'd advise you to make a formal complaint to the education department as this is a safety issue
