Hoping someone has experienced this before and could advise me on why it's happening and how I can help my 4 month old breathe easier.
We have tried everything we can think of; saline drops, bulb syringe (only if we can see mucous in his nose), vaporiser, cot elevation, steamy shower and vapour rub on his feet or cot sheets. Have washed all the bedding, steam cleaned the carpets, dusted, vacuumed, cleaned the house spotlessly in case it's from dust, even kept the cat outside or in the laundry. We have been to the GP, who wasn't concerned, and gave gave us prescription for an anti-histamine. We have even used infants gaviscon for silent reflux and nothing has helped. The doctor didn't seem to think an ENT specialist was necessary and he hasn't got a cold or bacterial infection, but he cannot breathe at all through his nose in the early hours of the morning. Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to help him?

We are in the same boat, except my little guy is 16 months old. It seems to happen more when the weather is changing. We currently have a referral to an ent.
Has you doc looked at his nostrils? Maybe they are not big enough? Have you also checked if he has sleep apnea?
I would check for sleep apnea if you havent already. I get very congested at night if the aircon is on or if there is a lot of dust. I'm usually a little congested i the morning no matter what though, probably because i can sleept without the ceiling fan on lol. I find that using a room spray with eucalyptus in it is really good, just a few sprays torwards the ceiling fan when I go to sleep and my nose/throat is a lot clearer in the morning. I also put in some tea tree because I love that smell too. I used to buy a lemsip room spray which was pretty good too, these help my husband who suffers with sleep apnea with his breathing also.
OMG sounds like you have tried everything. the only thing I could suggest is a nasal massage on his face. if you gently press either side of the nostril and move your fingers up towards the cheekbones in one movement. then press gently where the eyebrows begin (in the middle and move your fingers to the outside of the eyebrow. - I hope that makes sense.... I do it on myself also and it works great. Just pressing either side of the nosrtil works too.
