I am considering changing my last name to that of my kids. (They have their fathers name)
Has anyone been through this as an adult. I've read on the BDM webpage that you have to relinquish your birth certificate & have it reissued. I don't want to erase my current last name entirely.
Name Changes.

Why don't you get it hyphenated or change your current last name to a middle name
I have, it's not erased, you can choose not to update your birth certificate and just get the change of name certificate which I did but I got my child a new birth certificate, the name change and original name is noted on the back.. Of course you have to choose one name and go by it though, you can choose whatever you want, completely change or hyphenate. You Don't have to pretend your original surname never existed thougH.
So your birth certificate still has your original name as your birth name? That's where I got confused. I don't want it to appear that my 'new' name was my birth name. :-/
Yes mine does its my original I didnt get a new one. My child, I did and it has their new name on theirs because I effectively did want to rename them from birth, But I kept my original one and just show the name Change certificate when needed.
Also just FYI I never physically surrendered their originals birth certificates so I still have that one too.
I already have a hyphenated surname so adding another wouldn't be an option. I fact it's one of the reasons I am considering changing it. Lol.
