I am living in Cairns and am currently pregnant with Number 2 due end of April. Due to unforseen circumstances my partner is currently looking for a new job and some very well paid possibilities have come up in Darwin. I’m a little hesitant for a few reasons but biggest being packing up and moving 3000km away from friends when possibly 7-8 months pregnant.
I have LOTS of questions for IM’s that may have done this move, had a baby in Darwin, live in Darwin etc
1. What is the hospital like? I would like another natural water birth. We don’t have private health care.
2. What are the childcare centres like? And any good mums and bubs groups?
3. Who would be good to contact with regards to shipping our furniture and possibly a car up there? How much?
4. Has anyone done the drive up with a 3 year old? Any hints? Or should my son and I fly up to meet my partner?
6. We will be renting. Good areas? Bad areas?
5. The job is well paid but I know expenses like rent are a lot more. How are other living costs in comparison?
Thanks so much for your advise and help. X

I dont live in Darwin but has a son in the defence up their and have had a few holidays up their so i can only offer you some information on the living as we stayed in a self contained unit and we found the cost of everything very expensive in comparison to Sydney ....just basic food was a lot more bread was a extra $2.00 a loaf fruit and veggies and meat were very expensive ..I also have friends in Darwin and they say everything is more expensive petrol was nearly $2.00 a litre the reason being as everything has to be transported to Darwin .... even your meat and veggis so nothing is really fresh all transported up in cold storage from either Brisbane or Adelaide ... white goods furniture and cars are also very high priced for the same reason .... but in saying that you will get a remote living allowance that will cover some of the high living cost ..... Also if you can limit your air con use as electricity is also high ..good luck I really like Darwin even though its hot and humid or wet its a nice place .....
