baby shower being thrown for friend's daughter next month. My own daughters and I are invited. Invitation specifies where the honoree wants us to shop for gifts, 2 retail and one on line. All 3 overpriced and merchandise nothing special. My girls tell me several invitees are students, single or SAH Mums and the grandparents on the other hand are all very well off.Have never heard of baby shower where this happens.Do we go along with this ? get similar merchandise elsewhere ?just turn down the invite in disgust?(my preferred option right now.)

Last option. I would. I wouldn't dare expect a gift, let alone be so specific in requesting one! Everyone's different. When my sister and husband did their fb pregnancy announcement they attached a link to a gift register.. Each to their own.. Lol
Just because you are invited you are under no obligation to go or give a gift if you do go. I don't invite people to something so they can give a gift so if you can't afford what's on there list replace it with something from BigW or don't get a gift at all.
Some people are just clueless about how much other people can afford!
I'd just rock up with a pack of nappies :)
This is actually normal.. It's like a bridal shower or wedding there is a registry. If you can't afford it I'm sure she would be happy with something similar from a cheaper store and if she's not then don't go :)
thank you for viewpoints. Not a case of cannot afford the exorbitant prices, but value for money is an issue, and others invited will not be able to afford $50 for a stretch wrap, for example.Taking a pack of nappies!
