My husband is looking at doing a mature aged mechanic apprenticeship. Just wondering what the typical wage is at the beginning (I know it's not good) and what other things we might be entitled to. How did other families manage with the reduced income or did partners have to work full time as well to cover the loss? We are in victoria. Any information is appreciated. Thanks :)

Hi, My partner is in his 3rd year of a mature aged apprenticeship ( his second trade) and the money to be honest isnt that bad, it depends on the industry and minimum wage of course but he was getting paid better as a 1st year heavy diesel mechanic then a fully qualified pastry chef even though he has to travel a 3 hr round trip everyday for work. I don't work and while its been hard its manageable and in the long run we will be so much better off so very much worth it. Depending on how much he will be earning ( and it will be more than a kid just out of school) you will get the FTB both A and B and also there are other payments and things available to you from centrelink like a healthcare card.
My father is a Mechanic (cars, bikes Ultralite Aircraft, lawn mowers, chainsaws etc) and as Tania Phillips has said on FB, it is paid very, very poorly , around $500 - $600 after tax a week and that was ABOVE award pay. Research what a fully qualified Mechanic in your area gets per week before committing. Going and talking to Mechanics currently in the field would be a very good idea.
