I'm looking for the sisterhoods advice on IVF. I'd like to know about all the aspects of it. My boyfriend and I have been seeing each other for a few months now. It's not something we are planning on doing straight away but it's something we need to do in order to have a child of our own together and we are looking at our long term future. I have 3 kids from a previous relationship and he has none. He would like 1 or 2 children of his own I have always wanted a large family so going from 3-5 children isn't going to phase me. However I don't know much about IVF and I'd like to know the ins and outs. How many embryos can be implanted? How do they create the embryos. I had my tubes cut and burnt just over 2 years ago when I had my third child due to the relationship I was in (I have regretted it from about 6 months after I had it done) which is why conceiving naturally and in the old fashioned way isn't going to happen. I have friends who have gone though the process but I'd rather them not know about my thoughts at this present time.

hey, I have done IVF and so far not had success - but that doesn't mean you wouldn't!
I live in Aus and im 27yr, my husband is 37yr and we have been trying for nearly 3yrs. I have an issue with ovulation and long story short my doctor encouraged IVF if we want to fall pregnant sooner rather than later.
So back in Feb this year I started all the meds, had an egg collection and had a fresh transfer.
Basically it takes at least one month to prepare for the egg collection. It cost me $6000 upfront to get all the meds and injections necessary. It then cost me an additional $900 to go into hospital and have the eggs collected (the cost will be dependant on whether or not your health covers IVF) Then the transfer itself costs also.
So I had 8 eggs collected at the time of ovulation and over the course of 5 days, it diminished down to 4 healthy fertilized eggs, one was transferred at 5 days (blastocyst) and the additional 3 were frozen. My first transfer was fine, I fell pregnant but it had trouble attaching and remaining viable and I got my period (known as a "chemical pregnancy") So I was upset, but upbeat - because I fell pregnant! I then waited a few months because it is emotionally draining to say the least, then husband and I were ready for another transfer so I did a frozen one - leaving 2 on ice now. Because I'm young I am only allowed to transfer one embryo at a time. I think once you are over 35 or have had multiple miscarriages they will do 2. I feel pregnant properly this time and unfortunately miscarried at 6wks - one day prior to my 6wk scan. Its very sad and unexpected when it happens.
I have 2 embryo's left and I'll be doing another transfer in a few months when I'm feeling better.
IVF is hard but I would say the hardest part for me was the cost. We can afford it but the fact that you sometimes get no end result is a little bit of a slap in the face.
You could always make an appnt. with an IVF clinic and ask them the costs involved. I would advise you that if it isn't in your immediate future, to upgrade your health to cover any IVF related costs because that will be a huge help - and a 12month wait to use it.
Hope I covered everything :) GOODLUCK!
