Reading this and I can relate. I have checked for nits as one of my girls had them, but nothing, and I don't have dandruff either. So with the comment that it was nerves through stress I think that is right - being a few weeks out for xmas my stress levels have changed a little and it starting to make sense. Hopefully soon it will be back to normal.

I get eczema on my scalp and that can be itchy/ painful, I was just about to post to say that I find it is soy milk (and I assume other soy products) that flares my eczema up!

I have long and thick hair and have found if I don't wash the shampoo out really really we'll I can end up with an itchy scalp. Don't know if it helps but I also had to change shampoos a few times due to making me itch.

maybe an allergic reaction to shampoo you are using?

Stop using conditioner.

It could be your shampoo and conditioner. How often do you wash your hair? I find if I wash my hair everyday, my scalp itches more so I aim for every other day (I have super fine hair so if I leave it any longer it is gross). Adding oils to your scalp may help too (think coconut, avocado, olive or the fancy morrocan oils). Make sure you use a conditioner but rinse really well. Also make sure the water is not too hot. Hot water dries skin out. And as always, make sure you're drinking enough water :)

I had this problem. I went through a number of things (switching shampoo/conditioner, using antidandruff even though I didnt have dandruff, washing my hair less, washing my hair more, even changing the way I wore it and brushed/combed it). Eventually I tried a handmade shampoo using mint, no conditioner and within a week the itching had gone. I now use store bought shampoos again (as its easier than finding a good handmade shampoo) but I use less conditioner and I dont wash everyday, I wash once or twice a week and always rinse well, I also use a much lighter conditioner as well and use oil to put my hair in a mask every other week. It was the build up of shampoo/conditioner that was my problem and using the handmade shampoo really helped strip it and the mint was lovely and soothing too. I dont use any other products in my hair so I am able to keep things really simple and I havent had an issue with an itchy scalp again.
