Illegal super

Illegal super

my close relative is trying to access their super early by pretending to get lap band surgery but instead using the funds for whatever.

This is obviously quite illegal and this person is constantly scheming on ways to get money.

Should I report it and if so, would they even care?

I don't think they'd get away with it as I think they have to provide drs reports etc.

It's their super why should you care? In the long run she's the one that will suffer.

I used to work for a large superannuation/insurance company and trust me when I say super can not be drawn on for lap and surgery... She will need proof. I also agree with leaving it be though. It may be restricted till retirement age but it is still hers.

You need to jump through a lot of hoops to access super early - in medical cases there'll be a number of drs reports saying she'll need the surgery urgently etc.

IF she even gets it, it'll be a $10,000 max payment and that's $10,000 she won't have in retirement. Let it go. If she wants to try them that's her issue.

There is a lot of paperwork to fill out for medical reasons to take super. My hubby did it for me to have surgery on my teeth. My payments were issued to the surgeon the only money I received myself was the money to pay the hospital for the bed, anaesthetic and alike. They will only allow her to take the exact amount she is quoted no more and she needs to prove she needs the surgery urgently.
I wouldn't worry about personally. It's her retirement fund and if she can get the money and doesn't have the surgery it was issued for when and if she actually does need surgery and actually needs the money she won't get it.
