From memory about 15-20. Mum, dad, dog, stop, up, down, NO!!, more, please, car, truck and train come to mind when I think about it. Then all of a sudden around 18/19 months words just started spilling out of his mouth and he's now 20 months with a vocab of about 40. I think once they get to that age where they mimic it's easier to teach them more words, and they start putting two or three words together (eg dog bark, bye mum, car stop, it's all gone etc).
My son is 16 months and he has just started using a few more words, like truck and whats that but it has been very minimal up until now! I was starting to get a bit worried as my daughter was talking a lot more at that age, but all children are different and develop differently! I would discuss it at the 18 month old check up with the child health nurse or GP check up, just to ease your worries. I think if the child was still not talking much at age 2, then you need to get some further support from speech therapy but not at this age. Hope this helps!
My daughter is 15 months and only has 3 words /sounds
Uh oh , wow and wee she has copied up once or twice and says dada mummm but I don't think she understand them yet so I don't count it
My girl was not using any words at 16 months and has only started to pick up now (she is nearly 23 months) She now knows about 25 words. Some children take longer than others to start talking so I'm not overly concerned at the moment
I wrote down how many words my daughter knew around this age because I couldn't believe how many she knew compared to my older two children. She knew 40 fully understandable words. This was crazy compared to my other children who were not speaking at all until the were 3.5y's and 4y's they did know signs for important things though so communication lines were open.
Not sure if you're asking because you're worried or just curious, but it just wanted to say at that age as long as they understand tasks it doesn't matter if they cannot talk or only have a two or three word vocab. So for example if you asked your child "can you bring mummy your hat" or "where's the dog?" and they point to show you or bring you simple things they recognise then that's really great for that age. Words/speech is not a real concern until the age of around 2.5 years old :)
