grommets

Hi mums! Just wanting some information on grommets.

My 18mth old has fluid in both ears. They said to get the doc to give her a decongestant and come back in 6 weeks. If its still there they will refer my to an ENT. From there probably grommets will go in. Has Anyone gone through this? Can anyone provide me information on what the procedure is like and how their child was afterwards? Also if there is anything I can do in the mean time to help reduce the fluid? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi, my little boy had grommets done 2 wks ago. Best decision ever, he can hear so much better and his volume is down not deafening anymore.
The op was easy he was in and out within 30mins and we went home 2 hours later.

My dr suggested things like chewing snake lollies and blowing nose to try clear fluid before the op but didn't work for us.

Good luck

Hi my daughter has had 3 sets of grommets she has never passed a hearing test. The operation is very easy and it's over pretty quickly. My daughter has always been fine afterwards. We see dr Semple and he has been great. My daughter goes back for a check up soon and just hoping she doesn't need a 4th set because it's not very common.

My girl was 12mo when she got hers in. The operation and recovery were straightforward but very traumatic. Because she was so young they had to use gas rather than an IV anesthetic and coming out of it was horrendous. They say recovery should be within a week, but for us it was 2 weeks of maximum pain relief daily. She's a real trooper with pain and our ENT said there were no issues it just took her longer.
She has a lot of hair and washing it without getting it wet has been nothing short of stressful every time we wash her hair. Others I've spoken to have been able to use earplugs, headbands etc to keep the water out of the ears but because she was so young when it was done she wouldn't have a bar of it.
Make sure you have plenty of panadol and nurofen on hand. Keep ears warm. And if your boy does get another infection afterwards don't be too scared by the masses of pus that will come out of his ears, it means the grommets are working :-)
Good luck!
