Hi I'm looking for ladies experiences on gene testing for the breast cancer genes, and if you have been tested and it came back positive what was your choices on prevention. My sister and I are both under 30, we have recently lost our mother to breast cancer. Since our mum has passed her sister has been diagnosed, and two or her cousins are also fighting the disease. We are currently waiting on gene testing and I'm having a surgery to have a lump removed. If our gene test come back positive I will be considering a double mastectomy with an immediate reconstruction. I am looking to hear other ladies stories that have been in a similar situation. How much did it cost? Was it covered by Medicare? Did you get an immediate reconstruction? Recovery time? Did you choose a different method, ect. Thanks

Sorry for your loss. I have not had any surgeries as yet, but was tested four years ago and am positive for the gene. My Mum has only recently lost her long battle with ovarian cancer. In my experience there is a lot if support available through Women's and Children's hospital in Adelaide (this is where I was tested). I was also 7 months pregnant when I was tested and have had great ongoing support from my Obstetrician - I am currently 7 months pregnant with my second child. The advice I received was to start looking into surgery around 35 and family is complete. A couple years away yet, but will be starting the discussions after this little bundle of joy. The only advice I can give for now is try not to stress about what could be - you may not have the gene, and if you do, it is not a death sentence. Knowledge is the key as you are able to make fully informed decisions once you know all the facts. Good luck for the future
