Formula on prescription

Hi IMs was just wondering who here has gotten formula or feed thickener on prescription before and what process you have to go through to get it? My 7 week old son has both bad reflux and colic, at the moment I have him on a lactose free formula (S26 Original Lactose Free) which I thicken using Aptimal Feed Thickener, he is doing alot better on these but its costing me quite a bit buying both formula & thickener. A friend recently told me that you can get formula on prescription (I had no idea you could) so was just wondering whats involved? Can my GP prescribe it? Will I have to see a paediatrician? Does my baby have to meet some sort of criteria? Im also a single mum & have a pension card. Thanks in advance ladies :)

There will be specific criteria you need to meet to be eligible (or rather for bubs to be eligible). My daughter is gluten, lactose and soy intolerant and when we saw an allergy specialist he wanted to put her on Elecare to see if she also had a milk protein allergy/intolerance but for some reason we weren't eligible under the PBS so had to pay full price ($50 per tin that would have lasted half a week for us). We bought four tins and then my daughter refused to drink it (because everyone failed to tell us you can get unflavoured or vanilla flavour and of course the chemist ordered unflavoured). So I guess my only advice is go see your GP and get a referral to the appropriate people and if you do get a specialised formula, make sure your baby will drink it first!
