Feedback about Steiner schools?

I have been thinking about sending my children to a Steiner school, but I don't know enough about them to make an informed decision.
Does anyone have any experience with them, good or bad?

If your child is a self directed learner and a natural learner then they can be great. If your child has literacy issues they can be a nightmare. Each school varies on how much they follow the Steiner principles so read up on Steiner as some of the stuff is really 'out there' and other parts is quite mainstream, go visit a couple of different steiner schools and question them on what principles they follow and what principles they don't.
My specific experience is they don't teach spelling, punctuation etc until unusually late in the child's schooling which is fine if you have a child who is a natural reader. For a child who needs more structure to learn to read, spell and write it is a nightmare and there parents end up having to pay private tutors to prep the child to return to a mainstream school as you can't do year 12 at a Steiner school. I know because I was one of the tutors working with these kids in year 5 who couldn't spell basic words correctly. The child would then return to school next day and be congratulated on the terrific work they did full of glaring spelling errors etc and none of them pointed out to the child to work on!
