My 3yro has always been a quick learner, loves learning and has an amazing memory. BUT when it comes to colours, he had no idea! We have been working on colours for over a year every day . He can colour match and just started recognizing pink and purple . But gets so confused with blue/red/green. Even if I show him the red one and ask to point to the red he will point to blue . If he can colour match does that mean he's not colour blind? Can I get him tested this young ? Do I see my doctor ? Is this normal / should I be worried? Thanks

Here's a summary of what a child should be able to do. It says by the time they are 4 they should recognise 'some' colours. So I don't think you should be worried at this stage. http://www.education.com/reference/article/Ref_Cognitive_End_3_4_5/
My 5 year old son his recently been diagnosed with being colour blind. I suspected it since he was about 3. He has always picked up everything so easy but struggled with colours. Due to your sons age it's unlikely they can or will formally diagnose him. I had to wait till my son was 5. As for colour matching, I doubt it would be colour blind if he can do that. My son has never been able to colour match. Maybe try working solidly on one colour a week, do red painting, red crafts, talk about red objects. Do this with the colours he struggles with but only focusing on the one colour for a whole week. See if that helps. Good luck :)
My brother is color blind a teacher told my mum that he has trouble with colours and it turned out he was colour blind and he is 19 and he has trouble with some colors and will have to ask if unsure he has gotten into trouble at school in art for getting them Wrong even though the school knew that he was colour blind it wasn't until I told the teacher what was wrong with him that the teacher understood it

My husband is all shades of Colour blind, I believe there are 3 types he has them all. Although at first it caused some difficulty once they new it's not been a problem. There are just some shades of colours that he can't tell ones blue ones purple as they are the same depth & he may mistake one or two colours for another Colour. But it hasn't hindered his working life & he is great at what he does.
Colour deficiency (colour blind) can easily be tested for by your local optometrist, nothing scary for young one to handle, would most likely be shown some pictures and asked to trace the numbers with his finger. Like others have said it's hard to known when every child is different. Testing is generally bulk billed is Australia for kids so you could try testing him now and if results aren't defininitive you can go again in a little while. I would suggest seeing an optometrist if possible and not a gp as gp's really only spend a short amount of their training time looking at the eyes where it's all an optometrist does. Good luck :-)
