Bulimia

I'm looking for advice from people who have suffered from bulimia. When did you develop it? Have you been able to stop? What made you stop?

I'm 27 years old and developed bulimia when I was 23. I was overweight at that time and was losing weight for a big event (weighed 75kg and 5ft 6) but then relationship breakdown and new partner resulted in me making myself sick to lose weight. After about 4 months I got to 56 kgs and just before I was pregnant deviated between 49.5kg to 50.5kg. But this was mostly through not eating much during the day and only eating salads at night.

I got up to 70kg during pregnancy and 1.5 years later am now between 52-53kg. I did this mainly by cutting down food (no food during the day and salad and snacks at night). I have only made myself sick about once a fortnight previously but this week has been about every day (at the peak it would be three or four times a day every day).

Despite knowing it is bad I keep justifying it to myself. I feel healthy after, to me I still look chubby and nobody comments about me being thin so obviously I'm at a healthy weight. I'm of good health and nobody knows. I can't see anything negative about it but it obviously is if it's a disorder.

I'd love some advice as to what made it realise you weren't healthy. Thanks ladies :-)

Hi - I cant relate to the bulimia side of things. But I have suffered other types of illnesses. Depression, anxiety etc....Are you seeing a psychologist? I recommend even if you think you are healthy.... you should be speaking with someone about this. I am and it certainly helps regardless of wether you feel like you need to or not. Its nice to talk to someone and you know they are there to listen and you dont feel like a burden. You get a certain amount of free sessions and your gp will help organise this. You dont have to tell your gp just say you would like to see a psychologist. If you go onto calorie king I think it is called you can type in what you eat for the day and it has columns on your intakes and gives you targets to reach so you can aim for a balanced diet. Just remember you are beautiful and your health is very important. Try and eat balanced and do a healthy amount of exercise daily. I go to the gym for an hour if I can 5 days a week and put my kids in the creche. They love it! And it gives me time for me. I either listen to music which I find is my therapy or do a class. Also if you own scales which sounds like you might throw them out!! You dont need to rely on a number to be happy. I got to the point some days I weighed myself 4 or 5 times when trying to lose weight. Mentally felt let down.
:) best of luck and so good of you to reach out xxxx
