Best dog for a small unit on 3rd floor

I live in a complex, in a small unit with a balcony. I work 12 hour shifts 4 days a week. I'd love a companion dog. What would you suggest is the best breed for a limited space? It'd be walked regularly but alone during work hours. I'd love a PUG dog but can anyone tell me about their character or suggest a more suitable breed? Male or female? Characteristics experienced? Somethings to think about?

I would suggest a cat.

A dog can not be left for 12 hour days. They go nuts, especially a smaller breed. They will also bark, cry etc. it would be extremely cruel. They will also relieve themselves all over the apartment. Dogs need to be toiletted regularly through out the day. Could you imagine having to hold on for 12hrs??? The only way I would consider a dog was if I was prepared to pay for doggy daycare.

I will suggest not to get one. Normally you're not allowed if you rent or even own there's body corporate rules. Dogs bark and close neighbours get pissed off, dogs like to lie on grass and relax and sniff things and keep stimulated in nature, bored dogs bark and chew it would destroy your unit. they pee on grass will you take in downstairs every time it wees and poos at night or crack of dawn. I think it'd be too hard that's if you'd be allowed anyway, you'd end up rehoming it , best just to wait into you have a place with a yard. Look at house cats for now.

Please Have a look at greyhounds. Highly recommended for apartment living and don't require much exercise. They are so lazy:-)
