Hi, my 5 year old son has just started school. He can say the alphabet and count to twenty but he cant recognise letters or numbers. He cant read either. He has trouble concentrating on school work. He absolutely hates colouring in and just scribbles although I know he is capable of doing it properly. He would rather be out in the playground than sitting at a desk. Should I be concerned? Any tips would be appreciated!!

Firstly, talk to the teacher to see what they think. Then take guidance from them. There are a lot of kids who don't have any literacy skills when they start school. So it's quite possible he will be fine. Make sure you do the homework that's set etc. if there is no improvement at the end of term 1. Then I'd start making some noise about getting assessments done.
My 5yo can only count to 15 and has just started to write and recognise his own name, he can't read other then that. He doesn't like colouring in either, I'm not concerned. Your son sounds perfect
