What would people do if you owned a pet as a family, then the family split up and you were left with said pet and the expenses. You know you wouldn’t have purchased pet if you were a single but only did cause you shared the costs involved.

Talk with your ex, and see if they can take the animal on their time with the kids.
This is a hard one, as ppl are judgemental when it comes to rehousing pets. Regardless of the situation.
Your children will actually need that pet for emotional support. Coping with breakup of the family. Trust me I know from experience. When my marriage broke up. My eldest at 17 started to bring the dog to his room to sleep with. Try make it work you won't regret it down the road.
