Relinquishing parental "rights"?

Is there anyone who had been through the process of getting a consent order for sole parental responsibility or one parent "relinquishing their rights"?
Both parties are in agreement in this situation, as one parent has had no contact with the kids in nearly a decade (their choice) and the kids dont really remember a time before their "step" parent came into their lives.
The eventual goal is adoption, but we are hoping to take this first step in this mean time. Any advise is appreciated

My ex and I just went to mediation and he agreed to me having sole parental responsibility, this agreement is in the process of being made consent orders.

If the other parent is in agreement to you having sole parental responsibility could you not do mediation and have that made into consent orders?

As for relinquishing parental rights, that will come with the adoption of it’s approved. It is a long and complicated process to try and get it beforehand and usually only done in certain circumstances (best to ask a lawyer for more detailed information), not impossible but hard and likely expensive.
I’d save the money for the step parent adoption costs and just go for sole parental responsibility first

Good luck!!

In WA if you both agree you can go straight to a consent order, I just drafted up the proposed consent order, we both had our copies witnessed and then I lodged them with family court, there was a fee but I can't remember how much it was though. Just another thing because we agreed we could skip the mediation process, which made it a lot easier.

In all honesty though if your end goal is adoption and he'll agree to it, I'd skip the consent order and move straight onto that process because the consent order doesn't mean anything in the adoption process anyway (well that's what we've found.) as we're currently in the process of step parent adoption. It's about an 18 mth process but it's worth it
