Please forgive my stupid question as I’m extremely anxious and I have tried google and have had no answers. I had a bag of rotten potatoes in my pantry and I only noticed them today but when I picked them up they leaked all this gross smelling liquid. Now from google I have learnt that they can be quite toxic and am now worried about the ongoing smell and the rest of the food in my pantry. The food is all sealed so I’m hoping it’s not the kind of thing that can seep into food. And also how do I get rid of the smell. I have the pantry door open but it still smells really bad. And my whole house stinks at the moment but I do have windows and doors open.
So how do I get rid of the smell and will my food be okay?

I live in the tropics, it has happened to me heaps of times, as long as you clean it properly the smell goes away.
Not a big deal, it will be fine.
This happened to us a few weeks ago (we survived obviously lol), the smell of the rancid spud juice was horrific though!
Slightly off topic but the quality of supermarket potatoes has been abysmal lately, the bag I just mentioned was only a few days old and I opened a fresh bag for dinner tonight, peeled them, cut them to boil only to discover all were rotten on the inside 🤬
I know there's a shortage and all but damn...
Give your pantry a good clean and sanitise, wipe over the packaged stuff and you should be fine. Leave your pantry to air out over night if you're really worried.
I haven't had a good bag of potatoes for years. Same with brown onions, I got so used to them having extra brown layers or a bit green in them, soft bits and growing bits I thought it was normal until I got a bag of perfect onions that were so firm and white from a new supermarket and I was like wow that's what they're meant to look like lol. They leave onions for months!
Ugh, yes onions are just as bad! I almost forgot that onions aren't really meant to be green 😂
I haven't had a nice round white onion in years now I think of it...
And don't even get me started on those punnets of cherry tomatoes and berries lol, mouldy by the time you get them home half the time!
Get a box of bicarb, sprinkle some on a plate and pop it in the pantry, it should absorb some of the odour. Also I feel for you, it's so nasty 😩
I've had this happen especially growing up on a farm without air con. I had no idea they were toxic 😆 cleaned them up many times and just gave the area a good go over with disinfectant 🤷♀️
Keep them in the fridge. I worked at a potato farm a few years ago and they keeped them in a cool room. (sometimes for months at a time) put same bicarb in there it will help get rid of tha smell.
