Hi I have put on prednisolone for a week. Can anyone explain to me what exactly it does. I know it’s a steroid but wanting to know how it works? Does it help strengthen the immune system? The Dr only told me it will help with my symptoms and that I will need it for a week, but that’s all the info I was given. Interested to know how it actually works? TIA

what is it for? I know how it works for asthma, it helps open the airways
Quick google search says it’s an anti-inflammatory, it reduces inflammation (ie. swollen airways) and also explains what it does in regard to your immune system
Yes for allergies, asthma and pain.I stay off of google when it comes to anything to do with medication or medical, it gives me the worst anxiety, that I can’t shake and end up in a bad state. This makes sense . It seems to be used for so many different things that I wasn’t sure exactly how it works. Thx for this
I don’t want you to take this information and worry about it then, these are just the basics in the most general terms - It’s an anti inflammatory, it creates the drugs your immune system usually creates naturally to fight inflammation. So you get a boost and fight off your inflammation. But then, your body will get the message ‘ we’re getting enough of this, we don’t need to produce anymore’ so you will have a dip when you stop taking it, and actually have a poorer immune system.
I’d guess that’s why they’re really careful about short courses.
In saying all of that, my kids have never come down with anything after and have always only continued to recover and perk up in the following week. And if you get to a point where they need to give it to you, then you need to take it!
Always ask your doctor if you’re not sure what you’re taking or why.
I really appreciate this response. I did ask the question at the time and was told
It would help lol not much more info than that. Your kind response has helped me understand this so much more.
Glad to help, hope you’re feeling better soon x
