Can I ask a very simple question...but how does private hospital cover work?
I need to get an op done and wait list for public atm is 3+ years. If I were to take it out now and wait for 12 months, what else would I need to pay for apart from excess? Anaesthesiologist? Specialist? Surgeon? Nurses? Medication? Bed?
I feel like an idiot asking 😩😩😩

Don’t feel like an idiot. But I believe all of these things will be covered under private health. That has been my experience anyway. If you are unsure, ask your health fund. All the best x
There is always possible out of pocket costs depending on if the doctor and anaesthetist charge above what is covered. You can only find this out by asking the Dr etc for Informed financial consent.
I used to work in private health.
My daughter recently had surgery under private health and this was my initial cost, however every surgery cost is different.
Initial consultation with surgeon: $300
Anethesist: $500
Surgeon fees: $1200
Hospital fee: covered by private health
Excess: waived for children
I ended up claiming both the anethesist and surgery fees and got back around $700
For an adult though you would need to pay the excess and any medication.
It's hell worth it though if you can afford it, my daughter saw the specialist and 3 weeks later her surgery was done.
Just double check the wait time for that pre-existing condition, because if it’s 3 years in public it could be longer than norm on private. There’s exceptions to the rules so I’d go ahead and confirm exactly what’s covered before waiting a year.
You can have it done privately without private health . I had a breast reduction done privately without private health 3 months ago. The cost of premiums + out of pocket was nearly the same as me paying outright.
You just pay a gap, so depending on the service is how much you’ll pay. The majority of the cost will be covered by your insurance
