Moving to QLD

Hi, my husband and I are looking to move states in near future with our 5 year old son. We are unsure where to start looking, we are thinking southern QLD. We are after somewhere with good weather, great schools, employment opportunities (social work/support work and transport). Also important the area has support systems for our son he has epilepsy, sensory processing disorder and suspected autism maybe adhd.
Also want some where where houses are more affordable, prefer coastal areas but happy to look anywhere.
Thanks 😊

Yeah everyone in southern states has had the same idea so at the moment South east qld is inundated so job opportunities are ridiculously competitive and house prices are soaring a lot of people who have Been excellent renters for years now suddenly facing homelessness.

Yep. Thanks to southerners lots of Queenslanders are now homeless. It’s ridiculous.

Right so what excuse do you have for the people in the southern states who are in the same rental predicament? All those Queenslanders moved down there šŸ™„

There is plenty of mins around and especially in the tourism industry and cafes etc. It’s bouncing back and they need staff.

I don’t know about southern states the question asks how qld is. And I know here they come up for the sun and because we seemed to suffer much less through Covid, they have more to spend on houses because of the different economies and the housing market is just out of control, but then they settle and realise it floods repeatedly, we’ve locked down this year and missed more school, and once you start working you realise the income is lower and that’s exactly why we weren’t paying all that for houses in the first place. It’s an absolute disaster and the cost of living is rising so quickly that we are heading for a major disaster. I work with people with families who work full time very responsibly and I can list 5 close colleagues all with families right now facing homelessness.
There are waitlists for therapies and medical appointments too, there are no spaces for child psychologists and haven’t been for 2 years now.

I think the answer to wanting a sunshine change and also to be accessible to city facilities and affordable living is definitely not SEQld at this point. It could be looking about 5 hours north, or inland, but I’m hearing they’re actually suffering the same issues now as well.

I am on the Gold Coast and had a 2 week wait recently for child psychologist.

Try rent in a resort there is plenty around until you get on your feet and know where you want to be.

Haha! Yeah good luck with that. It’s because of people like you that homeless has gone through the roof up here in ā€œsouthern Qldā€. Houses have increased 40% in most areas even more in coastal spots and it’s nearly impossible to get a rental anywhere in Qld regardless of how good your rental history is. How about you stay where you are and enjoy the life you have.

It’s not because of people like her at all. It’s like it everywhere clown. How about she moves where ever she wants & doesn’t advice from you! I moved here and guess what, I got a place. You don’t like it? Pfft im not worried, I love my life here and enjoy every minute of it. Thank god I didn’t take advice from someone ok this page.

I got one quiet easy when I moved from interstate recently and both found jobs in the first week. Should I have stayed home because you told me to? What a ridiculous response.

Definitely can’t say that’ll be the experience for most at this time :/

I don’t know who the woman is who got jobs in the first week and a rental easily, maybe they are a pair of doctors?
We have a shortage of them.
But please don’t think this is the case for your average joe, because it definitely is not.

Had you been fortune enough to meet me, I would have passed on my positivity and kindness to you, because it sounds like you need it šŸ™šŸ¼

There's no perfect area.
If you want affordability you'll sacrifice on other wants.
If you want great schools and public transport you're going to pay a lot more.
Centre your search on the supports you say your kid needs. Then if you can't afford the asking prices on properties in the area it's not the right time to move.

Check mudgereeba. Coomera, Varisty lakes, Robina around Gold Coast. Check out resorts for privately own rentals in them. Plenty of jobs going. Good luck with the move, you won’t regret it and don’t let people put you off. Join local fb pages around Gold Coast areas, they often post rentals etc.the best primary school on the Gold Coast is broadbeach state school. Need to be in the zone. Check it out it has an amazing reputation for learning, one of the top schools in Qld. try some local resorts in the zone to get your started. Most have private Rentals’s if you ring around.

Not trying to be rude but where have you gotten this information from?? Gold Coast is one of the worst places to get rentals and GC Broadbeach SS is no where near the top of the list of top schools on any lists I've seen.

Google it.. it was on the news recently. It’s up there with any of the good private schools. My relatives children also go there and what their kids learn is beyond what mine learn. They are an independent public school. Many people live in the area just so their kids can attend this school.

That’s ok I don’t think you are being rude. Google it. Top QLD public schools, Google it. You won’t find a better independent public school for learning.

I would be doing some more research before you make the move. Rentals and jobs are so scarce here and the rentals are ridiculously priced. A lot of people have had to move back in with family here. Also covid here is really bad too and the hospitals are full and a lot of appointments and surgeries are delayed. I definitely wouldn't be moving here from out of state.

Now is not the time to move to SE QLD.
Housing is crazy, whether buying or renting.
Specialists for your son will also be difficult.
I would stay put for a while until the effects of covid settle down.
Hopefully all the people who moved up trying to escape covid, move back and rental/house prices go back to normal.

The rental crisis is awful here particularly in the Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast areas. I would hold off a couple more years as it's currently a mess here with very highly rent increases, low vacancies, not many jobs and high requirements for jobs (including entry level jobs) and the Healthcare system is shocking at the moment. I think you'd regret it if you moved here now. Also we're experiencing a lot of flooding which has damaged houses and businesses too.

I'm in Tasmania.

Out of interest I just looked up on realestate.com how many rentals were listed in the greater Hobart area with 3 bedrooms and priced at $450 or under per week. There was 17 listings!

To give you an idea, we currently have nearly 5000 people waiting for public housing and it's about a 12 month wait for priority one (ie, homeless).

That's not even taking into account other people who need to move out of their current rentals and into new ones and don't even get me started about the job availability here.

It's really arrogant to assume QLDers are the only ones struggling at the moment and that's its the fault of all us southerners because a good portion of the country is suffering with the rental crisis right now.

If I were this poster, I wouldn't be super inspired to move the QLD after the response here.

I moved here to QLD 3 years ago and I also find these responses arrogant. The shortage is no different from any other state and there is more jobs available here right now than there is jobs from where I came from.

Well that esculated quickly...šŸ˜‚ a simple "due to the rental crisis I'd strongly advise not moving at the moment" would probably be sufficient but its come down to this whole anti "southeners" business.

IN WA there's anti easterners lol. It's funny how territorial some people are. I moved from NSW to WA 20 years ago I soon learnt not to mention where I came from.

The fact that such a mundane topic like moving interstate has created such emotive responses really speaks to the level of fear and desperation a lot of typical Aussie families are feeling at the moment.
Homelessness is a genuine threat these days if you're a renter.

In saying that, I think a lot of you need to realise your anger towards the OP is terribly misplaced. She isn't to blame for the way things are!

I think with the housing crisis happening all over Australia, people need to sit tight. If your reason for moving to Qld is just ā€œfor a changeā€ now isn’t the time. The grass isn’t always greener. I’m on the Sunny coast (been here 11 years) and rentals here are few and the prices are ridiculous - our rent has gone up $100 a week in the past 12 months. It’s crazy. We were 2 years away from buying when the pandemic hit. I lost my job and the prices of houses have now risen 40%. Our dream of home ownership has now disappeared. Houses here aren’t worth paying an extra 40% for. The job market is weird with thousands of hospitality jobs that aren’t being filled while other industries are so competitive that it’s hard to get a look in. Sadly many of those who work in hospitality or retail can’t afford to live here anymore. Infrastructure is failing because of the huge increase in population. Public schools are overcrowded and don’t get me started on the hospital system. My hubby can’t even find a gp as most clinics aren’t taking new patients. The change we have seen here in the last 2 years has been dramatic and scary.

What goes up must come down. When the rental vacancy goes up again house prices will start to fall, same when unemployment % goes back up again. It will be higher than it was pre covid but will definitely drop from what it is now in the next few years. Keep saving!

With rising interest rates and aged in our 50’s and me struggling to find full time work I doubt we will even get a loan in a few years.

I can’t imagine what happened during covid, all the execs only needing to go into the CBD a couple of times a week, would have moved out there. I feel for you ā™„ļø
