Google your room or space and then add ‘decor’ or design ideas’ and scroll pictures. I save the ones I like until I’ve got a good picture of what I’m going to do. There is a million YouTube videos about home styling, rugs - size and placement, there’s even pages of women that organise their home and pour things into other Cute storage things and video themselves cleaning their home.

Get a garbage bag each week and walk around and fill it up. Take to op shop. I do this and it clear the clutter. Stuff I don’t use and things I know someone else could use.

Make things neutral colours, shared bedroom for my kids. They have green material beds and a nice white chest for toys etc with a wooden top. I keep bedding and sheets matching a lighter dusk pink. It goes well with the greys.

Strip everything back, get rid of the outdated stuff. Look on mocka website they have some good price modern looking furniture. I got some stuff and it lightens my home and gives it an up to date fresh modern look. I love whites. Whites always look fresh and create more space. Also cheap shops or taget Kmart for a few fake plants they look lovely with whites and adds some character. Nice new rug, try and stick to a similar neutrals colour scheme and work around that.

Start with one room at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself with trying to do more than one space.
I found that starting on my bedroom was the best place to start. I love my room, it’s important to me to feel comfortable and relaxed there, so I started looking a Pinterest, google and tiktok. I collected images of what I liked and then from there I searched marketplace/gumtree and used materials from Bunnings to create the look I wanted. I sold things I no longer needed to find the next room.
I saved the kitchen and bathrooms for last as they are the most expensive, I found.
Good luck and have fun!

I was young when I moved out, so people kindly gave me a lot of their old furniture/decor etc so my stuff was all quite eclectic lol. In the same token I also kind of became people's designated crap receiver.

My advice - start there. Declutter what you already have and reign you MIL in, you have to be really direct with people who do this because they think they're helping you.

Secondly, do a bit of research and figure out what your style is, what colours you like, what textures you like, how you want things to function.
Pinterest and Facebook groups are a good for this, type in Kmart/Ikea to FB and you'll find a lot of relevant groups.

Start with one room, I started with my living room because that's where I spend most of my time and have guests. I found this forest green rug at spotlight I fell in love with so then I themed items around that rug. I kind of ran with that foresty theme, I used woods in decoration items, got some indoor plants, used tans/greens/cream colours etc.

Once you find your groove, you'll be fine.

And just to add to this, always go with things you love not things you think you should love because they're on trend.
