The rental crisis has affected millions here in Australia. We have just a few days left on our notice to vacate (owner is renovating apparently) we had 30 days, and applied for well over 100 homes to get met with several disappointments of missing out, regardless of out impeccable rental history. I called today to ask for more time, and was told to call back on Thursday to discuss it. We will not leave our home until a new one is found.
IV noticed a huge rize in rental prices. Places jumping up almost $200 a week from the last tenant. So many people asked to vacate, only for the house to be relisted a few weeks later. We pay $390, the estimated recommend rental price is now $500pw. We truly believe this is why we are required to move, simply so they can up the rent in one big leap.
We are rural, where the average rent was about $370pw, now it's up to around $600 over the past 12 months, in a time when 1000's of people lost jobs to COVID, and homes to floods. How can they justify such huge prise leaps. Delapicated homes in dangerous locations well over $400pw. How to they expect low income families to pay these rents, and cover all the other bills.

I’m sorry you are going through this, it’s a total shit situation
It is a shot show. So many affected. So many kids worrying about finding a home or moving schools or missing school because the search is so long.
They think home loan interest rates are about to soar, this is what’s prompting the rise (as well as the market - because they can) but it is all about to crash for everyone.
Where is the government support, there would be so many facilities they could open as temp accom to prevent people becoming homeless.
This terrifies me as well.
I'm in Tassie and there is a huge lack of rentals to begin with which is a problem in itself but then the rentals in the nicer areas are rising to extortionate prices $550 to $600 for basic 3 bedroom places.
I currently pay $390 and I've been in my rental for 10 years, I just pray my landlord doesn't boot us out so he can stick the price up.
Here too, you'll pay $400 pw at the very least to live in the areas where houses get burnt out in the middle of the night.
I genuinely hope you find something soon, my heart goes out to anyone in this position.
It's scary. We have started applying for hones upto 5hrs away. Our kids are worried, they don't want change schools and lose friends. Having to find new jobs, drs, specilests.... Leaving support systems..... What adds to the annoyence is home here have been listed now for months as "available now" with several walkthroughs and landlords rejecting every single applicant. One house, the agent pushed hard for us as we rented through them a few times. The owner has turned down every applicant over 10weeks, claiming no one is suitable. How could that be? Just pick a family already. Right now, locally, there are 12houses that have been available since we got notice, with several walk throughs and are still empty.
Maybe the landlord isn't wanting a family? Or the house isn't suitable for pets? Or they're seeking a short term Tenant because they might sell and want options? Or perhaps they have family that might need it and they're holding off making a decision until that is known. There might be valid reasons and you just won't ever know why.
The big issue is that you are due out and if you don't meet that, legal proceedings with a warrant are likely, though state to state differs. Can you hire a storage unit and move in with family and friends temporarily in order to leave on time? Failure to vacate probably won't help you get a rental application approved in the future
PS... Sorry this isn't what you want to hear but it's important that you don't affect your future by what you do now if you can avoid it
Iv already gotten advice off the rental board of NSW through fair trading. They can't force you out. If you have proof you are applying for homes, informed the realtor of needing more time, leagally they can not make us move and it can't go against us on our rental history . They will most likely give more time, and the realtor is meant to help us find a new home. Then they can take us to the tribunal who will most likely give 60 more days.
One realtor told me many landlords are holding off for the prodicted interests rise to then increase rents.
That's lucky. NSW is very generous compared to other states
I had to move my kids and leave a job I love because I couldn't get a rental and my place was getting sold. Now I've moved and got a new job and I need to move again due to them raising the rent by $60 a week. It's just not right :(
You pore thing. It's not right is it. Their should be a law on how much the rent can be increased at one time. $60 a week is so nasty. How they expect people to be able to support themselves is stupid. I truly hope u find something soon.
