Has anyone had surgery to correct a bad over bite? I had braces as a teen but now in my mid 30s I bite my cheek often, have a lisp and get bad TMJ, so can barely open my mouth some days or bite anything hard because my jaw hurts so much. I believe it’s all to do with my overbite. Wondering the rough costs and healing time? Thanks!

I know one person who had this done in her 20's, and it was absolutely horrific. They broke her jaw in numerous places, had it wired up for I think 6 - 9 months, no solid food for over a year and it was probably 2 or 3 years before she ate steak or apples etc.
She has it done because her dodgy jaw was causing some severe health issues - she weighed about 40kg because she couldn't eat, got migraines and inner ear infections constantly and had sleep apnea.
She went private and I think it cost about $30k (15 years ago) after some Medicare rebates due to her health issues.
She took the entire year off work & uni while she recovered.
15 years on she still has to be careful how she eats & gets some residual pain.
Find a dentist who does it with ortho instead of surgery, it is possible I had a huge over bite and didn’t wish to do surgery, we’ve more or less fixed it with just braces.. just keep looking, the risk of relapse at 30 and the cost included with the down time wasn’t an option for me, my quote was around 30k including hospital stays etc
