10 year old with anxiety.

I would like any ideas and success stories from anyone who has had a 10 year old with anxiety and trouble talking to people. She is fine if she's comfortable and with friends, but new people and crowds terrify her. She can become mute and won't communicate. Covid lockdowns over the last 2 years have exacerbated it. I was thinking about some kind of therapy? She starts a new school next year and I'm worried she will have a lot of trouble. I can't afford to pay hundreds of dollars for psychology services.

In WA psychology is free for under 18's even through private clinics, so it may be the same for wherever you are. My son was like this when he was younger he would just shut down in certain social settings. He was diagnosed with a rare anxiety disorder but the behaviour you described can be general anxiety disorder and seeing a psych will help her learn coping skills and what triggers her anxiety. Start with your GP or school and ask for a referral.

If you are unable to afford a psychologist see your GP for a mental health plan which can give you a reduced cost for a specified number of visits and inquire about public waiting lists (I've heard there can be up to a 2 year wait in some areas). This is a crucial age in your daughter's development and anxiety coupled with the usual trepidation of a new school may be hard for your daughter to cope with. I think it is worth seeking help.

My son was like this. Take her to the Drs and get a care plan. You will get 10 visits through Medicare and if you need more, you will get them to see a child psychologist. Don’t delay it. My son has come so far.
