Issues with Mirena IUD

So, beginning of last year, I consented to have a Mirena IUD inserted, I was informed of the common side effects, of the not so common side effects and still followed my gynaecologist's advice because it then meant that I wasn't going to be losing large, painful clots anymore. Fast forward to November last year, which begins a whole bunch of medical problems, such as a heart attack, the return of my type 2 diabetes, which, after having a gastric sleeve in 2016 had meant that my diabetes was controlled completely by my healthy diet, a weight gain of at least 5 - 10kg, which is a rare side effect of Mirena insertion, the removal of my gall bladder, etc.

I return to my gynaecologist, a year after the insertion and mention everything that has happened and am informed that, after having an ultrasound to see placement, etc. the Mirena is still in the correct position, but the arms of the Mirena have migrated and are no longer where they are supposed to be, another rare side effect that can happen, according to the gynaecologist. In the mean time, whilst my heavy period has stopped, I still get all the pain associated with a period and develop spotting, occasionally losing a small clot. Fast forward about 4 or 5 months (around June/July this year) and I find that exercising hurts, sex with my partner hurts, doing any form of physical activity hurts and I get sharp stabbing pains in my uterus. I also develop another symptom of having a Mirena inserted, because of the extra hormones going through my body, I'm developing thrush more often, this year I've had it twice, where as before the Mirena, I never got it. Then two weeks or so ago, I had a massive bleed (for me), which resulted in the loss of a large clot again and almost excruciating pain and blood flooding the bed because I wasn't expecting it to happen. My gynaecologist has agreed that it needs to be removed but can't do that until the end of November, to let the stent from the heart attack last year to settle completely.

I guess my question is, has anyone else had any issues/horror stories with getting the Mirena IUD or am I just a special case?

Never had a problem once it settled after around 6 months after insertion and I'm now on my second one.

I’ve read tonnes of horror stories, lots of people have terrible experiences- did you do some research before you consented to have it put in?
I’m onto my third mirena and it’s been an absolute lifesaver !
I couldn’t have survived without it. But it isn’t for everyone

I did do research and figured that the benefits outweighed the risks. Looking back on it now though, I'm beginning to think that I shouldn't have gotten it.

You're right, it's not for everyone but if it works for you, then that's awesome and I'm glad to hear that not everyone has had issues with it. Maybe I'm just a weird, special case lol

Definitely not weird or a special case, it doesn’t work for lots if people. Atleast you know it’s not for you and can look for a better option

Piss it off and get an ablation! I lost my sex drive and had the worst cramping.

Yep, horrible experience with the mirena. I was basically told that I had to have it inserted to have endometriosis removal and was assured that it was lovely and would solve all my issues. I cannot tolerate oral contraception (I’ve lost count of all the different ones I had tried) but was told the mirena was a localized hormonal release so I would be fine. My periods disappeared (I had heavy bleeding ands the clots) but I still had agonizing cramping. That’s when they tried to prescribe me a low dose anti depressant, because I basically was told the pain was in my head (the neuro pathways for pain have been there for so long that even if I had a small amount of pain, my head thought it was massive, this is sometimes true but not in my case). That’s when I put my foot down, I demanded to be listened to. They ended up removing the mirena, and as I do not want anymore kids, gave me ablation (which was a god send for my blood loss, the best decision ever). I still get the cramping associated with my cycle but I am no longer anemic (which was obviously a result of my monthly blood loss). All in all, I was happy with the end result, the decision I made.

Women are all too often dismissed by doctors when it comes to reproduction health. All I can say is good luck and DEMAND to be heard!

Worst device ever. I will never put that thing in my body again. Also if you have a history of anxiety or depression some doctors are good at warning you off it. Others are useless and keep telling you ifs completely safe. There are numerous women warning others off it and I wish I had of paid attention. It made me so sick. I ended up being checked for blood clot. Had migraines, light sensitivity, dizziness, palpitations and was an emotional mess along with other things. I hate this device but I realise it has helped some women with heavy bleeding. It is very much your experience and if you suspect it's playing with you please get rid of it.
