Talking to your children about the birds and bees.

Talking to your children about the birds and bees.

At what age did you talk to your children about sex and safe sex/the birds and the bees?

My oldest is coming up to 11 and I’m wanting to educate him this year or next about sex but so unsure on how to do so. I want him to hear it from his dad and/ or me and not school year second hand information or the basic school taught stuff.

Any advice from mums that have been here before. How did you approach this topic? Did they freak out? Did they seem disgusted? Did they have questions? Help.

It’s definitely time.
For me it started much younger than 11, and it was lots of little talks rather than one huge talk.
Hopefully by now you’ve already started the process, changes to the body, private parts, consent (no, means no, not just in regards to sex).
We had discussions when a family member was having a baby.
I can guarantee that your kid has already heard some gossip, girls can start there periods from 9years old. I started mine at 11 and I wasn’t the first kid in my class to do so, and we all knew who had there period, and boys were noticing who was wearing a bra.
There are plenty of books available to suit many styles so maybe that’s a good place to start.

You’re a few years too late. He will definitely have heard about it at school by now. Age appropriate information from when they are very little is the best way to avoid them being uncomfortable.
