Something has really been getting me down and makes me question the person I am.
When I'm talking to this one friend she or I may bring up something that is sad like someone passing away or something emotional that we have seen on the news and my response will be that it is really sad or that has upset me or that it made me cry. Her response would be
"wow you do have a heart"
It really hurts makes me feel like I'm a heartless monster that is incapable empathy or compassion.
It very well could just be a throwaway comment a joke or her way to be funny.
But it really hurts I don't want to bring it up with her but just looking for some advice on what I could say when it happens again. Because it has happened many times already

Sometimes just a little pause says everything. Don't laugh, don't continue the conversation, and maybe ask her... do you really think I'm heartless?
A lot of times those throwaway comments are learned from family while growing up. Even If we hate it being said, it still slips out like programming every now and again. So maybe ask her, has anyone ever said that to you?
