Domestic travel insurance

Would you purchase domestic travel insurance with everything that's going on with the corona virus?
My main concern is being stranded at the other end, trying to get home. Will they cover cancelled flights or do I need to get insurance through the flight provider for this.
Also, will insurance cover accommodation if I have to extend due to cancelled flights, god forbid - an infected family member etc.
I have tried to contact the insurance provider myself however don't get very far in the que before the line cuts off. I'm guessing a lot of people have similar questions.

I always thought the airline had to pay your accommodation and food if they cancelled a flight and didn't have another within a certain time. Try the airline and ask what happens, they may even have it on their website

You should check as coronavirus is classified as an act of god and that isn't covered by insurance

No insurance taken out now will cover Corona related issues (except possibly if you get ill). It's a known event. If an airline cancels flights they're supposed to compensate you with accommodation etc. plus reschedule or refund flights - but there's never a guarantee.

Your best bet is to read the pds & Corona statements on insurers websites & make your own choice. If you want confirmation, email them so it's in writing in case you need it. They'll be vague & will never say yes - it's always 'no' or 'maybe'. Expect long wait times for responses.

It's worth having if they cover things you need (like rental car excess insurance). It's so busy right now no one can contact insurance or travel providers (we're cancelling an overseas trip so are in the throes of this now!!)

Basically don't rely on insurance. It can be a lifesaver but it's not a cover-all solution.
