Separation & finances

Separation & finances

Hi there,

My husband & I are separating & I have no clue where to even begin. We are on a lease that doesn't run out until Feb. I need to separate myself financial while we are still under the same roof as I am a full time student who works minimal hours so he is the bread winner. I want to be ready to go by Feb.

It's not amicable, we do not speak unless we are fighting. He has told me he will never leave as this is his home & he doesn't want to be f***ed over by child support. We live together but only as house mates. I'm in with our children in their room. I still cook for everyone as I don't want to rock the boat. I do not do any of his washing or cleaning etc.

Where do I start in regards to preparing financially to leave & gain some Independence?

Thank you!

Staying in a leased home isn’t going to save him child support 😳..

Start by having all your entitlements and pay into your own account. Then ring the utilities and find out how to get your name off. Notify real estate that you need to be taken off lease but hubby will be staying on

You can apply for centrelink “seperated until one roof” and get parenting payment single providing one of your children is under 8. Contact cs yourself and inform them you are seperated, care will likely be listed as 50/50 until you move out then you can change it accordingly.
