Toddlers speech

Mums,

I’ve got a 20 month old daughter and I’m a little worried about her speech.
She babbles a lot but as for proper words she doesn’t say a lot. She knows what you are saying to her and she does know a lot of words but she just doesn’t always repeat them (except no 😜 of course). It’s like she will hear a word, say it a few times and then won’t repeat it again.
Her father and I are always talking to her and using proper language (not baby talk) and we always chatter back to her when she babbles.
Does this sound normal for her age?
I did bring it up at her 18 month check up but they were pretty happy with her.

It never hurts to speak to a professional.

My son is the same (19 months). We had him checked out by GP and MHN and we were told as long as they're trying to communicate with you then they are on track. It doesn't have to be clear words, just that you understand them and vice versa. With my son, I know what ba means, or derrr, or bombom etc .. he has his own words but is communicating just without clear words.

If you’re really concerned, check it out but for what it’s worth, sounds like the norm with my kids. She’ll probably surprise you and start whipping out heaps of words soon. I think it’s normal for them to use a word for a while and the loose it again before picking it up a while later

It’s normal she is only 2. I wouldn’t be worried until she is 3-4
