Kindergarten and sports

Hi, I was just after some tips and thoughts/experiences with children who have just started kindergarten and wether sport is good to put them in or if they’re exhausted etc from first year of being at school five days a week. My eldest has just started school and he’s doing great considering five days etc but is a bit tired on the weekends. My husband wants to put him into a sport next term but I’m unsure. He’s never been in a sport before either. I just don’t want it to be too much or should he be pushed a bit with it?! What is it like with a kindergarten student. I would like some help please.

I’d recommend it.
Most children’s sports are played during the week, or first thing Saturday morning.
Soccer is fantastic for kids this age as they develop coordination, team work and make friends.
Depending on the sport, they may also learn the joys of winning and losing.
Having sport early Saturday morning also helps as I found energy creates energy, and sat arvo and Sunday were spent chilling out and unwinding.

If a team sport seems too taxing, maybe opt for swimming lessons instead? But ultimately if he’s coping during the week then I’d say go for it

My son has just started school however he has attended sport formally for a while now. And we plan to continue unless there is a problem.

So he currently does Nippers, Little Athletics, rock climbing and swimming. Then in winter he will do AFL, swimming and rock climbing. He also wants to try basketball..

It maybe too much but it may not we will adapt where necessary. Don’t over think it!

Thank you both, it was helpful! We’re going to register him for soccer, he wants to play so we’ll see how things go. He does seem to have lots of energy but has moments on the weekend where he has a little melt down so we’ll just take it as it comes.

That’s all you can do! He will soon let you know if it is too much! Or he will thrive and love it!
