Sunscreen

Hi there
I have a fair skinned boy that sunscreen doesn’t work on. Cream that works for my daughter & myself won’t work for him & he always ends up red faced & burnt. I finally found a Cancer Council one that worked, we ran out & I bought a new one..he got burnt.the ingredients were different ☹️.. Summers just around the corner & I’m in need of suggestions, we’ve tried all most all of the supermarket ones. Thankyou 😘

Edit. - he is very independent 10 yr old that wears hats religiously & long sleeve rashes when swimming.. I do as best as I can to keep him in the shade but he’s 10!!! He wants to ride his bike/scooter, play ..I’m just after sunscreen recommendations.. Thankyou

Rashies hats long sleeve uv shirts and shorts and shade. Outside early morning and late afternoon and short bursts. I'm a person that just can't be out in the sun and apart from work I don't try to be.

So as the adult dont take your family out where there is no shade in those hours in the middle of the day. That's life.

My redhead is 5yo and she doesn't want to stay in the shade either, I get you there! But what the other poster is saying, I totally agree with. If we go out during summer, we get there around 9am and are usually gone by 12pm when the sun is getting highest. If we go out in the afternoon then we go around 3pm so we miss the hottest part of the day. If you go on the BOM website you can see the UV index for the coming days also, so you can plan an outing for when the UV is lower.

We use Moogoo sunscreen. It is a zinc based sunscreen that goes on quite thick & white but once it has soaked in, it's clear. We also have a Zinc stick which we put on cheeks and the nose. They come in lots of cool colours. Hope you find something that works 🙂

For my kids I use sunsense sensitive. It protects against uva and uvb. I researched this a lot as we have a pool and wanted to take my 6 month old swimming occasionally. It is a pain in the sense that they turn white like a ghost as it contains zinc but in saying that I'd rather a ghost then a lobster child!

He probably needs more than sunscreen, long length rashies and wide brim hats!

Moo goo sunscreen!! And obviously try and stay out of the hottest part of the sun, and for after he’s been in the sun (and winding down for the day) try the after sun moisturiser. It has green tea in it and takes a lot of the “heat” out of the skin, and provides a moist barrier to allow the uv to escape, and promotes healing of the epidermis.

Cancer council 50+ sunscreen was like cooking oil on my fair skin, I have never been so sunburnt! As a freckly red-head, I have always been allergic to the sun. Surprisingly what works best for me is the cheap stuff from woolies or Kmart. $10 for the pump bottle and I have never been burnt using either brand, and we are at the beach every single day at varying times of the day. I have used all the more costly brands, and always burnt to varying degrees, but never with either of these. Worth a shot for your boy too. Good luck.
