Books to explain periods

Looking for a good book to explain periods, my 13 year old twins have just started.

Hi Jean!

At their age, they are probably more ready for you to have a chat to them if you feel comfortable doing so. That way you can be transparent and approachable for them rather than just handing them a book. More than likely, school has already taught then what a book will tell them.

Do you have any suggestions, my mum never had the talk with me. I wouldn't know where to start or how to word it.

Of course! It can be a bit awkward but just make sure you are approachable and they can ask questions.

Firstly, it's really important to stress that just because they have their period, it doesn't mean they need to be sexually active (I know that sound crazy, but sometimes there's pressure that now they are a "woman" they must have sex).

I'd just explain to them that a woman starts producing eggs which eventually will create a baby. Each month when that egg isn't fertilised by a sperm, it sheds away from the uterus and the lining that was surrounding that egg bleeds out. I'd show them pads and tampons and show them how to correctly put them on their undies (and offer tampons if they want them, but they can be uncomfortable so young). Also, put a little bin in their toilet with some paper bags to discretely and cleanly dispose of their items. Ask if they have any questions about puberty or is there anything they want to ask? Let them know they can come to you if they need to.

I'd also just tell them to keep some pads spare in their school bag, just in case it ever happens and they are not prepared and a spare pare of knickers :)
