Earlier this year I separated from my husband due to DV and (his) mental health issues. Unfortunately this was not prior to a terrible incident where I retaliated and was charged with assault. Just wanting to move forward I accepted the charge And the six month good behaviour bond given to me by the court. I don’t want to get bogged down in discussion regarding the fact that I probably should not of been charged (I have since had lawyer friends whom I was sadly to ashamed to approach prior advise I never should have been charged given circumstances). I want to apply for a working with children check in New South Wales but have been given conflicting advice whether my assault charge will affect it. I have applied today but they have told me it will take at least four weeks. I just wondered if anybody had any previous experience with this?
Please be kind it has been an extremely stressful and upsetting time. feel already shameful enough.

I have an acquaintance who has a rap sheet a mile long, the majority fairly minor things, some more serious like assault.
She has a national police check, working with children's card and working with vulnerable people card, as far as I'm aware it's never impacted her being able to obtain these checks or employment in the disability sector, though quite frankly she'd be the last person I'd trust with any of my disabled relatives - she's proof that the security check system is flawed, however that's a discussion for another time!
This has actually shocked me a fair bit. Here I was stressing about 1 speeding fine and getting WWCC...

Assault will most definitely stop you getting a blue card. But they have a tribunal that looks at appeals for circumstances like this
