My husband has admitted he has a drinking problem. Who has been through this? Did you get through it?

I’ve been in a relationship with an alcoholic. I wish I could tell you we got through it. In my case by the time he admitted it, he was no longer functioning in any normal way. I knew he was an alcoholic well before he admitted it.
Wether you get through it or not, will depend on wether he actually gets help and commits to it in a meaningful way.
I’d be encouraging him to get help from his GP and being referred to a psychologist who specialises in addiction.
In my case, he really needed to check himself in to a dry out clinic for a week, but he kept checking himself out before he’d complete his treatment. He was also driving drunk etc and couldn’t be left alone with kids etc. so it was time to separate. I think in these kinds of situations you have to be brutally honest about the effects everything is having on kids etc.
Yes had been on this rollercoaster for years. He would drink every single night and even hid empty bottles and cans around the house to hide from me exactly how much he was drinking. I begged and nagged him for him to get help, but that would only make it worse. Then last xmas his morbidly obese father came to visit and even though he had a chest infection he was still smoking and drinking. He was horrendous. After he left it was like my husband had seen himself in 30yrs time and it scared him. His has cut his drinking down to a couple 1 night a week, has given up smoking and started gym and really just has been working on himself.
Let your husband lead his recovery, but assist in ways he thinks his helpful. But HE has to be the one to want to get better, no amount of nagging or begging from wives will do that (trust me i know).
Yes, but it took the death of a family member & faith for him to admit how bad his problem was. 7 years later on, he still has control over how much he drinks. I know he will never slip back into his old habits. All the best x
