My son has been invited to his first birthday party and i would love suggestions on how much you generally would spend and on what. The child will be turning 4 and goes to my sons daycare.

I only spend $15 for classmates (i know some people would think that's cheap but it get expensive after a while) I think you can usually get something pretty good for that anyway!
$15 kmart or target. A toy and book or ball / pool toys and towel, game, pjs, art set, blocks. Favourite kids books are good animalia, wheres wally, there's a really awesome popup dinosaur book.
My kids love getting cool towels, I always used to think it was an odd gift but now I think it's great lol!
I like receiving the different things too, last longer and get more use, bags, swimmers, pjs, towel. To be very honest I put half of the toys and stationary away straight after the party anyway and regift or save for a rainy day as there is a lot of it.
Yes, stationery used to be my go to gift until recently I saw a little girl receive about 5 of the same Kmart pack of pencils and stuff. I try and get "outside the box" gifts now lol.
$10 in a card. Or something up to the value of $10.
That's all my nieces and nephews get (I have a tribe of them so very expensive), so I don't spend more than that on friends.
I can't believe that some people spend $50+ on gifts!!! (You will see this ridiculously large amount when it gets posted to FB).
Do what you can afford. But $10 in a card is plenty!
