So I just got a little surprise! My 8 and a half year old son mentioned his penis was a little sore, it doesn't hurt to pee or anything and of course I asked if it was red and would he mind showing me. Well everything looked fine but omg he has got public hair! Not heaps but it is most definitely there! I will take him to a our gp but in the meantime I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this? Could he really already be starting puberty??

Hell yes. Some kids start from 8 years old.
I mean, I’m in my 40s I know there were girls in year 4 who wore bras and had periods. It’s not the majority but not out of the blue either.
There is also a thing called precocious puberty, that usually occurs prior to 8 years old.
Are you sure it's pubic hair and not just body hair? We're all covered in fuzzy hair all over our bodies (even babies) depending on your genetics some peoples will be lighter, darker, courser or thicker. If you and your sons father come from hairy families that can be a cause too.
I'm sure a trip to the gp will be helpful and reassuring though.
We had the same issue with miss 7, took her to the doctor due to her getting B.O and darker hairs around her vagina and they explained that for her it wasn't pubic hair but rather an age where her body hair darkens- apparently around the age they start loosing teeth their hair also darkens and gets a little thicker ( I honestly never knew this happened) maybe go to your gp and have a chat I'm not sure if boys have similar experiences but apparently girls go through a couple of hormone and body changes before puberty
I was reading an article recently that boys have their last big testosterone surge before puberty starts at around 7-8 years old, so what you mentioned would make sense.
If it's just on his testicles it's prob just fuzz that you haven't noticed. My son was born with fuzz. If it's dark in other places it would be pubic. I remember getting pubic hair that young. Don't make him feel embarrassed about it or make a big deal. Maybe talk alone with doctor if concerned otherwise he may try to shave, pluck or just get generally upset. Maybe should see doctor about pain though
I know this is a girl but thought I'd mention it anyway, I am a teacher aide and there is an 8 year old with her period at the school I teach. It's not un-heard of for kids to start puberty this early.
My 9 year old son has very 'fuzzy' testicles. Its blonde hair but lots of it. It's becoming more evident. His voice is also very pitchy.
My son is 9 and has hairs on his own is has had for about a year since he was 8 and just starting to get booo :(((
He's my only child to :((((
I’ve had a paediatrician tell me that the first sign of puberty in boys is an increase in testicle size. My 12 year old son has definitely started puberty in the last year or so, but my 10 year old son hasn’t yet (the paediatrician said he would most likely be a late bloomer due to his health issues). My 12 year old doesn’t yet have pubic or underarm hair but the body odour is not pleasant. Definitely talk to your gp. It would also be worth getting some books on boys and puberty for you and your son to read, so you both are aware of the changes to come. I borrowed several from our local public library, just searched puberty in their catalogue then had a flip through the books to ensure they were relevant.
